Artist Discovery: Bryan Joon talks about his self-entitled album

Updated: Apr 8, 2018

Korea native, Queens based Bryan Joon has been actively pursing music for the past 2 years. This R&B Singer-Songwriter whose repertoire spans from R&B, Soul, Pop, and Blues is originally from Seoul, South Korea but was raised in Connecticut later moving to New York City to have his shot at stardom. He recently released his music video to his hit single, "Frozen", a soulful and almost gospel-feel that is a reflection of his past "almost" relationship. "Frozen is a song I actually wrote when I was 16 and it was really inspired by me having a stupid internet crush who didn't like me back.   It's very silly to reflect on now but I think a lot of people can relate to liking someone and having it only be a one way street and then struggling with moving on from that." The video for Frozen was shot as a simple performance video featuring Joon himself in black and white by Director Gambino who captures the intimate emotions and somber overall feel of the video.

Aside from releasing a single and music video, Joon's latest album which is self titled and released in February of 2018 features songs such as "Frozen", "Pretend" and "Name". The album starts off with a 47-second instrumental that builds up into a suspenseful power beat which sets the feel for what's to come. It is then led into "Pretend" which Joon's deep, well-rounded voice pours in with a catchy pre-hook and a catchy hook that reflects a Pop-R&B aura. "365" is an extensive of pretend mimicking the same layers of sounds and tempo as Pretend, creating a part 2 of the narrative that is to come to end. Wondering offers a 90's vibe that reminds you of that 112 and Boys II Men vibe, reminiscing of that one love that just stays on your mind. The album is very well-rounded and diverse in terms of genres and instrumental offerings, although we would like to hear more textures and melodies from Joon that can separate the songs from each other, but it's obvious that Joon has worked extremely hard on this piece and put his all into it. "It was two years of recording, writing, mixing, mastering, re-mastering, editing, making the artwork all around my regular 9-5 gig.   It took a long time and was a big sacrifice in terms of not being able to have much personal time but I'm really happy it's done and I hope folks feel as strongly about the project as I do because it really was a passion project. I would say one of my favorites is "Name" which is going to be the next single and video is really catchy and I like that. I also really like the beat/bass work in "We Lost it All" and "Nowhere" is the song that resonates with me the most emotionally. So those are probably my top 3.  But I really tried to sequence the project so that it almost tells a story in order and I am really happy with how the whole record came out. "

Inspired by R&B we wanted to know if Joon could collaborate with any artist of his choice, who would it be? He answered with the great and awe-inspiring, Alicia Keys, someone who demonstrates wonderful talent and all around artistry. "She's one of my favorite artists and I think her passion for musicality is amazing.  Songwriter wise I would love to work with Babyface as he's a legend.   Production wise I would love to work with Pop & Oak.   And also Mariah Carey and Jazmine Sullivan....I love a lot of artists and would love to work with so many people.   I could probably list 100 more folks easily."Besides listening to the Allstars, Joon also shows his love and support to local artists such as Shenna, Sha Collins, Silent Celeb, Michelle Singz, and Jennifair. "Everyone is doing their thing and I'm really proud of them. I also really like Brent Faiyaz a lot right now."

We believe that the path that Joon is heading for, Alicia Keys and Co. are closer than he thinks with his sound being more composed than most upcoming artists these days. In the future, Joon has aspirations to quit his day job and strives to gain more fans, streams and followers. His biggest goal for 2018, he says is to gain placements on major TV shows and films as well as make music his full time profession.
